  • Flags of the World  An official government site, sponsored by the Central Intelligence Agency. This is an UNCLASSIFIED site. Click on a continent, then select a country for flag info. Select by name, word or letter search. Also gives details about the country selected. An in-depth website. Very good for doing school or maritime research, or identifying a flag on a vessel in port..
  • Countries--Martindale's The Reference Desk.  Get information on countries, territories and principalities in the world.

        • MapQuest:  MapQuest Interactive Atlas-Pick a location, and get a map of the area. Great site for printing out a travel map, door-to-door.
        • U.S. GAZETTEER   U.S. Census Bureau. The gazetteer is used to identify places to view with the tiger map server. Obtain U.S. census information from the 1990 Census Lookup. You can search for places, counties. Please note, that it will generally only search for incorporated cities or towns. This site will also give lat/long, and area maps. Maps may be outdated, and based on early 90s data. Maybe useful for

    • The Smithsonian Homepage   Search databases within the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.
    • Virtual Library   World Wide Web's Internet Virtual Library.
    • Public Library   Internet Public Library--Ready Reference Collection. Links to top reference resources on the web, search by subject and title or keyword.
    • Martindale's The Reference Desk   Look up science tables, calculators (navigation, GPS, air & ground), dictionaries, maps, postal codes, plus a wealth of other information commonly found in a library/reference center.
      This site also includes references for boating subjects, including GPS, fishing, knots, rigging, navigation, sailing, scuba diving and navigation codes. A very impressive site.
    • NOAA Photo Library   The NOAA photograph and image collection--For those interested in studying our natural world, oceans, the atmosphere, and the history of those who began the study of our environment in the United States.
    • Hoax Busters  C.I.A.C. INTERNET HOAXES   Computer Incident Advisory Capability, U.S. Department of Energy. A U.S. government public service site listing internet hoaxes. Can be used to identify hoax e-mails.

    • Law Dictionary   A dictionary of legal terms.
    • U.S. Law Library   U.S. House of Representatives Internet Law Library. Acccess the U.S. Code; Code of Federal Regulations (CFR); various state laws and regulations, U.S. Constitution; state constitutions; plus a wide variety of other federal and state laws, including maritime laws.

  • G.P.S.: Global Positioning System

    • GNIS Data Base Query Form, U.S.G.S.   (Domestic) U.S. Geological Survey: Geographic Names Info System. Enter an area or location, and get the LAT-LON reference, elevation, county, and if an incorporated area, the population.
      Upon arrival at the site, enter the city, town road, structure in the box labeled "Feature." Be sure to write or click on the state where the feature is located.
