Each year during the boating season, members of the Auxiliary throughout the country conduct safety and search and rescue patrols on their local waters. These patrols provide assistance to an average of 25,000 boaters in distress and help save almost 500 lives annually.
Auxiliarists conduct these patrols in specially equipped, privately owned powerboats and sailboats. These craft are available to assist with emergencies like fire and collisions. Auxiliary members who are FAA certified pilots, using their privately owned aircraft, assist on air patrols by spotting oil spills, disabled vessels, and other on-the-water emergencies. In addition, selected Auxiliarists serve as crew members on Coast Guard vessels and aircraft conducting safety, search and rescue, and pollution patrols.
In qualifying as a Crew Member, Coxswain, Pilot, Aircraft Observer, Air Crew or Radio Watchstander, you will receive specialized training from both the Auxiliary and Coast Guard. This training provides the necessary skills and confidence required to take on the challenges of safely accomplishing operational missions.
In addition, those qualifying as Pilot, Coxswain or Air Crew are awarded a metal breast device to be worn on the uniform above military and/or auxiliary ribbons.
